James Ingram Merrill (March 3, 1926 - February 6, 1995)

In 1955 <a href="http://articles.courant.com/2009-12-04/features/hc-home-james-merrill-1204.artdec04114216_1_james-merrill-poets-poem">Merrill</a> made his home in Stonington, and lived there with his partner David Jackson for the rest of his life. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his 1976 collection, Divine Comedies. Merrill served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and as the first poet laureate of Connecticut.
