Topographic features and the location of the home in relation to the water can add another layer of protection. For their project, Doman and owner-investor Gregg Broderick chose a site with views of Long Island Sound and Faulkner's Island in one direction and a tidal marsh in the other. The lot, however, is across the street from the water and 14 feet above sea level -- two feet higher than the 100-year flood plain.
