So the four state hockey teams are finally on the same page and in the same tournament. Starting the year after next, anyway.
UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and, yes, even Yale, have all agreed to particpate in an annual all-Connecticut tournament.
The Frozen Holiday Classic will be held at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport Dec. 27 and 28. The field is UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Union, this year's national champion. In 2015, Yale will replace Union, and the hope is that a tradition will have begun.
The Frozen Holiday Classic replaces the UConn Hockey Classic, which has been held each of the last 21 seasons. Last season in Hartford, UConn, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and UMass made up the field, with Quinnipiac winning.
“UConn hockey is very excited and honored to be asked by Webster Bank Arena and its organizers to be a part of this annual holiday tournament,” UConn coach Mike Cavanaugh said in a press release. "Every year when you look at your schedule there are certain games you circle that are very important. The holiday tournament is always one of them. We couldn’t be happier at the University of Connecticut to be a part of this.”
The MVP of the tournament will be awarded the Tim Taylor trophy, named in honor of the last Yale coach.
“UConn is excited to be a part of the inaugural Frozen Holiday Classic hockey tournament,” UConn AD Warde Manuel said. “Webster Bank Arena is a first class facility and Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment president Howard Saffan and his staff have put together a great event for college hockey fans in the state of Connecticut. This will be great opportunity for Husky fans to experience UConn hockey in Fairfield county as we begin play this fall in the prestigious Hockey East conference.”Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
