A 20-year-old Hartford man became the city's 12th homicide of 2008 when he was fatally shot early Saturday after a fight broke out at a nightclub.
Police say the shooting occurred after the fight led to the closing of Club Blu at 191 Ann St. The dispute continued into the parking lot at 200 Church St. Police say that Joel Hightower of Congress Street, who celebrated his 20th birthday Friday, was fatally shot.
He was shot several times in the chest.
Another man was shot in the leg. Police declined to name the second shooting victim, who was treated at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.
The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. When police arrived there were about 100 people standing by. Some of the onlookers were recording the scene with cellular telephone cameras, police said.
Hightower was pronounced dead at St.Francis.
The gunman was described as black, about 6 feet tall and wearing a white T-shirt, a red hat and jeans. He had a silver handgun. Police found 15 shell casings on the ground.
Saturday's shooting was one of three shootings since the state police came to Hartford last week to help curb violence. There was another shooting Saturday night on Brook Street in which the victim sustained injuries to his shoulder.
