Thumbs up to the University of Connecticut, the greenest school in the nation. The Sierra Club recognized UConn as the No. 1 "Coolest School" for offering hundreds of sustainability-related classes, slashing water use, retrofitting buildings and serving local food, including honey from the school's apiaries, among other things.
Congratulations to Lorenzo Sewanan, a Trinity College graduate now at Yale School of Medicine, for winning a poetry contest for medical students. Mr. Sewanan, a native of Surinam whose first language was Dutch, is pursuing an M.D. and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, according to the New Yorker Magazine.
And of course, kudos to Yale University for its Nobel Prize winners Robert J. Shiller (economics) and James E. Rothman (physiology). Thank you for showing (not that evidence is needed) that Connecticut is on the cutting edge of Big Ideas.
Congratulations to the Woodland House, the Hartford high-rise condominium on Woodland Street, celebrating its 50th anniversary today. Combine a great mix of people — units are mostly owner-occupied — with a well-designed, well-maintained building and you've got great urban living.
Thumbs down for the nitwit New York driver caught doing 130 mph on I-84 in Tolland. There haven't been enough bad accidents lately?Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
