WALLINGFORD – Kelly Whaley carded a final-round 75 to win the Connecticut State Amateur Championship at The Farms Country Club on Wednesday.
Whaley of Farmington seized her third title with a 54-hole score of 218. She was not challenged seriously from her opening shot. Catherine McEvoy of Greenwich was second, 14 strokes back (75—232). Danielle Lamy of Weston (77—233) finished third.
"It's so cool to win this, to represent Connecticut," said Whaley, 17, who also triumphed in 2011 and 2013.
Her 14-shot victory Wednesday didn't match her 16-stroke margin last year. The tournament record for greatest margin of victory is 21 by Liz Janangelo in 2001.
Whaley was 1-under par 35 on her first nine Wednesday. But a double bogey 6 at No. 10 led to a 4-over 40 on the back side. But she finished with a tap-in birdie at 18, which symbolized her dominance in the three-day event.
