Longtime Cheney Tech-Manchester baseball coach Gary Marineau has resigned to be the baseball coach at Valley Regional High School in Deep River.
Marineau had a 303-139 career record in 19 years at Cheney Tech. His teams won two Charter Oak Conference tournament titles, seven Constitution State Conference division titles and the last two CSC tournament championships. Cheney Tech was 19-7 last season. One of its victories was against defending Class L champion New Canaan (7-1) in the second round of the state tournament.
"It was a very difficult decision to leave Cheney, which will always be in my blood," Marineau said Thursday. "The main reason is to be closer to my home in Old Saybrook, to be with my family and to see my son Toby more. The day [May 27] I won my 300th game he hit two homers in a Little League game, and I missed them."
Marineau takes over at Valley Regional for Mike Bono. "Mike decided to go in a different direction career-wise," athletic director Jeff Swan said.
Swan said Valley Regional is "excited to get Gary. It's a step up for us."
"Valley has great athletes, which you've really seen in the recent state tournaments in football and basketball," Marineau said. "There's a great enthusiasm for sports there. They play in the Shoreline Conference, which is a great, competitive baseball league. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
