1935-1940

<B>1935:</b> Johnny "Schoolboy" Taylor was one of the great players produced by the state, a standout pitcher and hitter as a senior at Bulkeley High before becoming one of the best pitchers in the Negro Leagues in 1935-45. He beat Satchel Paige 2-0 in an All-Star game at the Polo Grounds, pitched eight career no-hitters and was a star in Cuba and Mexico before returning to Connecticut.

<B>1936/37:</B> Larry Kelley and Clint Frank, both of Yale, were the Heisman Trophy winners in the second and third years of the award. Kelley won it in 1936, Frank in 1937.

<B>1939:</B> First season at the University of Connecticut; beat Coast Guard 14-0 in first game played under flood lights at Gardner Dow Field.

<B>1940:</B> Connie Mack, baseball's Grand Old Man; Edward Reilly, Bridgeport Central High School basketball coach; Hubert Sedgewick, dean of state sports writers; and Bobby Jones, golfing legend received Gold Keys at the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance first banquet on Jan. 29 at the Hotel Taft in New Haven.
