Barbara B. Kennelly (born July 10, 1936)

Kennelly is a former Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut, according to the <a href="http://articles.courant.com/1994-10-17/news/9410170186_1_special-election-1st-district-whip">Hartford Courant</a>.  In 1975 Kennelly was elected to the Hartford City Council, where she was a member until 1979.  She served as Connecticut's Secretary of the State from 1979 to 1982.  Kennelly was elected to Congress in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Cotter. She represented Connecticut's First Congressional District from 1982 until 1999. Kennelly did not seek re-election in 1998, running instead for governor of Connecticut against Republican incumbent John Rowland, to whom she lost.
