Art Projects to DIY

If you're feeling creatively blocked, try one (or all) of these suggestions and let the inspiration come to you:

MUNDANE: cook/bake; do laundry; re-pot plants; check out a book, from your local library; go for a walk, sans your phone - maybe bring a camera. Sometimes the brightest ides come to us during mundane daily activities - like showering.

GET LOST: in a dollar store, at the beach, on a bike ride. Doesn't matter where. Allow yourself to get lost in a moment and then find yourself.

SOUND & SIGHT: Go see a movie - by yourself. Listen to music - live music, new music, create music; maybe even dance a little. Pretend no one's watching.

PLAY: with a child, a dog or blow bubbles - chase the bubbles and see where they lead you.

EDUCATE: take a class. (Broward and Palm Beach class locations listed below.)

MAKE A MESS: try one of these arts projects:

1: When it comes to getting crafty, I can't resist a project that repurposes old household items. Like this upcycled honey jar turned into a vase for flowers. A handful of them in varying shapes and sizes painted with complimentary colors also looks chic in a windowsill or as a table scape. Just pour acrylic paint - or you could even use old paint samples from your last interior design project - and swirl. Paint and gravity do the work for you - let dry overnight and voila.

2: Painted bday cards: Here, watercolors and white paint marker.

3: Hand-painted cards make for thoughtful gifts: Here, acrylics and gold paint marker.

4: Makeover up an old scarf or beach sarong with an afternoon of tie dying. This was a dingy cream-colored scarf that I never wore but after an hombre dip-dye job with standard tie-dye ink it's a go-to for brightening up an outfit.

5: Here, I drew some little flowers and my best friend's initials with a fabric marker on a plain white handkerchief for a bday gift - these would also make sweet bridesmaid gifts with the wedding date or the bride's new initials.

6: Print a photograph on paper with standard toner ink and transfer it to a canvas with Mod Podge photo transfer glue; make it a mixed media piece by painting it or continue collaging.
