Free lunches for first day of school

So long, summer. It's been swell.

It's time to go back to school.

With children returning to South Florida public schools on Monday, this week will have its challenges.

Here are a few deals that will help make the transition a little less painful for everyone.

Back-to-school bashes

Several South Florida Whole Foods Markets are having back-to-school bashes Sunday.

Here are highlights:

At 3 p.m., stores in Coral Springs, Pembroke Pines and Plantation will give away free lunches for the first day of school to the first 100 kids at each location. In Palm Beach Gardens, stores will give away 150 prepacked lunches at 11 a.m.

Bags are packed with a turkey sandwich, apple, KIND bar and a drink.

There are freebies and deals to be had at locations in Boca Raton and Wellington, too. Hours vary by store, so call for details.

Free eats

Restaurants are offering free meal deals this week.

Olive Garden is offering its popular buy one entree, take one home promotion, which also includes a free Redbox DVD rental with text signup. Details at

Starting Monday at PDQ, kids get a free meal with purchase of any combo from 4 to 10 p.m. through Friday. No coupon is necessary.

At Boston Market, it's the same deal, but you do need a coupon, available at It expires Aug. 31.

Makeovers for moms

Kids looking a little shaggy?

Get those kindergarten through sixth-graders over to the salon at JC Penney for $10 haircuts. While mom's waiting, she can get pampered with a deep conditioning, hair blowout and eyebrow wax for $25.

Both offers end Sept. 6.
