Her story: Katherine Cox, 28, grew up in Baltimore. She is an exercise physiologist in the cardiac department at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Her mother, Donna Cox, works for the L. Warner Cos. Inc. in Timonium, and her father, David Cox, died in 2001.
His story: Scott Smith, 28, also grew up in Baltimore. He is a senior workplace wellness program manager, or consultant, at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. His parents, Jane Smith and Sheridan Smith, are retired.
Their story: Scott and Katie met in May 2009 at Canton Station in Baltimore during a mutual friend's birthday party. Scott was working on Capitol Hill and living in Washington at the time, and it wasn't until a few weeks later — on June 5, 2009 — that they had their first date. After he drove more than two hours through a heavy thunderstorm and Friday afternoon traffic on Interstate 95, Scott took Katie to dinner at Swallow at the Hollow near Belvedere Square.
"He offered up Oceanaire and James Joyce, and all those places in Harbor East, and I think I kind of said I was more laid-back," says Katie.
Following that, Scott and Katie's next few dates were at Camden Yards for Orioles games.
"We love baseball, and we grew up playing softball and baseball," Katie says. "It was definitely an easy bonding part right there."
The proposal: On Aug. 24, 2012, Scott proposed to Katie with a ring from Smyth Jewelers. Coincidentally, it was Cal Ripken Jr.'s birthday, though Scott says that wasn't planned.
"It was just an ideal Friday night," he says.
Scott and Katie had just bought a house together, so the proposal caught Katie by surprise.
"I had absolutely no idea. We were focused on getting the house and all the excitement with that," she says. "It was a good surprise."
The venue: About 125 guests attended the traditional Mass held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, which is near where Scott and Katie live in Rodgers Forge. For the reception, they both knew that they wanted a venue in downtown Baltimore, and as baseball lovers, Camden Yards was their first choice.
"The fact that we both kind of grew up there, it has a sense of family already for us," says Katie.
A cocktail hour was held on the rooftop bar at centerfield and the reception took place in the B&O Warehouse.
Her dress: The bride wore a lace, A-line tulle gown with lace straps and a sweetheart neckline by Watters from Betsy Robinson's Bridal Salon in Reisterstown. She wore a bracelet that was a bridal shower gift from her younger cousin and a diamond heart necklace that her dad gave to her mom shortly before he died.
Bridesmaids' dresses: Each woman wore a pale yellow or pale gray chiffon floor-length gown from Alfred Angelo Bridal. Those in yellow dresses wore gray shoes and those in gray dresses wore yellow shoes.
Men's attire: The groom and groomsmen wore gray tuxedos from Jos. A. Bank. Scott wore a gray-and-white striped tie, and the groomsmen wore yellow ties.
Decor: "I wanted it to feel like we were outside in the summertime," says Katie. She collected vases and candles to place on the tables, which had white linens. A seating chart displayed a baseball card and number of a past or present Orioles player for each table, accompanied by a list of guest names.
Special touch: As part of a wedding gift, Scott surprised Katie with an appearance from the Oriole Bird during the cocktail hour. Scott and Katie later spent time on the field taking pictures and playing catch.
Flowers: Crimson & Clover Floral Design Inc. of Roland Park created the bouquets, centerpieces and boutonnieres using daisies, wildflowers and succulent plants. Katie had her dad's cross tied into her bouquet.
Music: Dan McGinty of Beat 2 Beat DJs entertained the guests. Scott and Katie's first dance was to "Only You Can Love Me This Way" by Keith Urban.
Dessert: Woodley Bakery, where Scott often went with his grandparents when he was growing up, made the four-tier cake with buttercream frosting.
"To be able to use that as a reminder of my grandparents — my dad's parents who have both passed — was pretty cool," Scott says.
Favors: Each guest received a box of Cracker Jack tied with a tag that read, "Thank you for joining us on our opening day as Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
