I can’t believe I’m actually at this point. I mean I know it’s wedding shower season, but for it to be my wedding shower was an eye opener to how close we actually are to my May 25 wedding.
My surprise shower was lovely! I had a hunch when it would be, so I came dressed appropriately (which I was very happy about later since it allowed for some great photos). The evening, themed “Nacho Average Bridal Shower,” was complete with a nacho/fajita bar, sangria, margaritas and a sombrero. There was also a piñata (so fun!) and margarita treats as favors.
The night included socializing and opening presents, which for guests, always feels like it takes forever. Well now I know that it takes forever for the bride, as well. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love presents, but it is very overwhelming and a lot happening all at once.
My bridesmaids and mom did a great job in the planning, and in knowing the presents take forever, so they came up with two fun activities to break up the sitting and watching. The first was for me to listen to memories that guests wrote when they arrived and try to name who wrote it. I think I did pretty well on this one. The other was to hear a question and try to match the answer that Sam gave to the same question. For every answer I got wrong I had to chew a piece of bubble gum. Well, I didn’t do so well, and I ended up with a huge piece of gum and a sore jaw, but still, it was a great laugh and fun game.
Overall, the shower was very “me” and I appreciate all of the thought and time that went into it. Being on the other side -- as the person being celebrated -- provided me with a lot of insight on the whole idea of showers, and I think I can appreciate future ones that I'm invited to much more now. And remember, brides-to-be, this is a monumental party in your life, so take a minute to look around and take it all in!Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
