I am not a cake person. 

If you put a giant, lovely cake next to a bowl of crispy fries doused in malt vinegar, salt, and pepper, I would grab the fries and leave the cake feeling unwanted and alone while I devoured my hypothetical starches. 

 Not loving sweets is usually a great thing. I rarely order dessert (unless "salted" is in the description), and the candy aisle holds no power over me. Something like chocolate covered pretzels will occasionally pique my fancy, but then, there's salt involved there, too. The problem with cake is that it's all sweet. Inside and out, it's an homage to sugar, with no room for my beloved brine. 

 So the question arises — at our wedding, do we let them eat cake? 

 As this year of wedding planning continues, we've had a million decisions to make, and we're sort of stumped with this issue. Rob is not a huge cake person either but would throw me in front of a bus for pie (any pie, made with any filling, by anyone, at any time). He suggested we forgo a cake and just buy tons of pies, and I suggested we have a tiered cake, made of wheels of cheese. The marriage may not work out. 

Our wedding is already a bit unconventional, and part of me feels a cake — and the cake cutting — would bring some structure and tradition to the evening. I have no idea how this part of the ceremony began, but it's a crowd pleaser, and I'm not one to deny the masses their sugar fix. I've considered buying a small cake just to cut, but also having an array of alternative desserts (and cheese) set out. Cupcakes seem to be a popular alternative right now, but then we'd have tons of tiny cakes instead of just one big one.

Perhaps I should just stick with tradition. I've seen some incredible-looking cakes recently, and would happily add one as a statement piece. It's been my experience that the better a cake looks, the worse it tastes, but if we back light it for the photographer, we'll have a stunning visual memory, if not a taste-based one. I'd love some help with this. Did you (or do you plan to) have a cake? Did you provide lots of different baked goods for your nearest and dearest? Any local bakeries I should try before officially nixing tradition? Your input will be most appreciated by me, but especially by our guests.
