1901: President William McKinley is shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y.; he dies eight days later and is succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt.
1991: The Soviet Union recognizes the independence of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
