Today is World Turtle Day, created by the animal-lovers at American Tortoise Rescue as a day to celebrate and protect turtles and their habitats. As someone who lives with one turtle (a box turtle named Yertle) and is about to inherit a red-slider this weekend, I feel compelled to weigh in on the idea of turtles as pets.

Like Freeway, the lovable stray dog at the center of this very teary comedy, "Darling Companion"has lost its way. Even the marquee ensemble anchored by Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Kevin Kline and Richard Jenkins is not enough to rescue this motley mutt of a movie.

The June 2 event raises money to help homeless labs.

Dog-lovers, get out your calendars and save the date for the annual Lab Rescue Dog Walk in Annapolis. The 2.25-mile walk raises money for the nonprofit Lab Rescue organization, which last year rescued 904 dogs. The goal this year is to raise $50,000 so the group can continue to have a big impact in helping vet and find foster and permanent homes for homeless labs.
