Sarah Jayne Orton of Finksburg turned 5 in May, and asked that all of her birthday gifts be donations to the Baltimore Humane Society. Her family had adopted a dog, Scooter, from the shelter before Sarah was born, and the kindergarten student at Mechanicsville Elementary School wanted to help other homeless animals.

When Sarah died suddenly earlier this month, those who loved her knew the perfect way to honor her memory: with a dedicated fund at the Baltimore Humane Society. Her family has announced the creation of The Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Foundation, which will provide care for the animals at the society's no-kill shelter.

In her obituary, Sarah's family said she wanted to be a princess when she grew up, and that her favorite color was "rainbow." She left behind her parents, Chad Edward and Kendra Jayne Orton, big sister Emily Kathryne, and, of course, Scooter.

A plaque will be mounted on the Baltimore Humane Society dog kennel in memory of Sarah, and donations to her foundation can be made by mail (Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, Md., 21136) or online at bmorehumane.org/donate/sarah-jayne-orton-memorial-foundation.
