If you’ve been thinking of adding a kitten or cat to your family, June is the month to do it. For the fifth year, two Baltimore shelters will waive adoption fees all month.

The Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance celebrates its fifth annual Baltimore 500: A Race to Save Lives during June, which is Adopt-a-Cat Month. All month, the Baltimore Humane Society and Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) will waive adoption fees on kittens and cats.

“We are now in ‘kitten season,’ when there is a surge of adorable, unwanted kittens entering animal shelters that are already full with cats needing homes,” says Aileen Gabbey, executive director of the Maryland SPCA.

She says the goal is to adopt out 500 felines this month.

Last year, the Baltimore 500 saw a record 769 cats and kittens adopted; a total of 2,552 felines have found new homes during the event since 2009.
