Tommy( Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun photo / December 9, 2013 )
Physician William Andersen felt a connection with Tommy the Maine Coon cat the moment he spied him in the Petco adoption area. He and his wife, Barbara, already had a cat and hadn't been looking for another, but something about the big tiger-faced feline spoke to the couple.
"The lady at the store said he'd just been brought in my a lady who said, 'Here. Take this cat off my hands before the kids come home from school,' " says Andersen. They did exactly that, and found Tommy to be a wonderful house pet. They now suspect he'd been spraying in his first home because he hadn't been neutered.
Tommy is now 11 years old and has already enjoyed a little bit of fame: A photo Andersen took of him won first place at the Maryland State Fair a few years ago. An indoor cat, he likes spending time on the front porch of their Ruxton home and sometimes trying to go a little farther. "We have a movable fence at the steps to the porch that he likes to try and shove away," says Andersen. He's also won the hearts of the Andersen family.
"It is superfluous to say that we love him and he loves us - in his own way," Andersen says.
