Pokey( Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun photo / January 14, 2014 )
Jennifer and Adam Smith met Pokey the hedgehog through Tru Chance Hedgehog Rescue & Rehab in 2010 and found an animal that definitely needed a second chance.
There were three hedgehogs at the rescue that day, says Jennifer. "One was an albino, one was a very large hedgehog and another was a ball of quills, scared and clicking at us," she says. "My husband felt so bad for the hedgehog who was terrified - he thought no one else would want to adopt her."
Pokey lived up to her name and took quite some time to unwind herself from a tight ball; the vet said she was probably not used to human interaction. She quickly adapted to a rodent wheel and ran all night long, seeming delighted to have a toy. A year after the Smiths brought her into their Laurel home, she finally warmed up to them, licking the pages of a book Jennifer was reading one day.
"We were able to get an old book that was being thrown away and give it to her as a toy," she says. "Now she flips the pages with her nose and tears out the pages" to play with.
Since then, she's gained weight and learned to love having her back scratched and her nose and cheeks rubbed. She also loves eating waxworms and crickets and enjoys treats from the Smiths.
"I'm so proud of her," says Jennifer. "She's come out of her shell and learned to trust people."
