Hampden( Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun photo / May 20, 2014 )
Hampden is something of an establishment in his Baltimore neighborhood, but after 14 years there, being recognized on the street has become old hat to this rescued dog.
"He was a stray," says mom, Beth White. Lab Rescue of the Potomac came across him wandering the streets of Hampden years ago, and he became the first -- and one of very few -- non-Labradors taken in by the volunteer group. "They still recognize him when they see him," says White.
Hampden has a soft, fuzzy tan coat and is called a "Purebred Hampdenese" by his family, who have no idea what his real breed might be. About 30 pounds, Hampden loves people and makes friends quickly, and seems convinced that anyone who comes into his family's house is there just to see him. "Hammy is annoyingly friendly," explains White. "He thinks everyone who visits the house is his guest. But every contractor, repairman, and mail carrier loves him."
White's children are in college now, but Hampden spent many years riding shotgun in the car during carpools to various area schools. "He greeted kids and teachers alike," says White. She's aware that his advanced age might mean he's not around for too much longer, but says his 14 years have been fantastic.
"He is full of love," she says, "and nearing the end of a great life."
