Amelia( Kenneth K. LAM, Baltimore Sun photo / May 29, 2014 )
Amelia's life didn't start out so well - when she was rescued from the streets of North Carolina, she had filthy teeth, very long nails and was covered in fleas. Brought to Baltimore by the Maryland Animal Sanctuary & Rescue, she was quickly adopted by Craig Mitchell and Allyson Smith.
Amelia spent her first city days chasing pigeons outside City Hall and showing off her Orioles and Ravens bandannas.
The Jack Russell-beagle mix moved with the family to Towson last year and passes the time snoozing in the sun, chewing on Smith's plants and chasing squirrels, sometimes with cats from the neighborhood. She also enjoys a diet complemented by treats of blueberries, carrots and the occasional bite of steak off the grill.
Amelia, 2, had a big party for her birthday last year, and her graduation from obedience school was attended by several relatives and friends - all wearing custom shirts for the occasion. Smith says she hopes people look at Amelia and realize that many street dogs can make amazing pets given a little time and attention.
