Ashburn( Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun photo / July 21, 2013 )
Peter Coolbaugh has a long history of rescuing and finding homes for stray cats from the streets of Baltimore. But something about the friendly feline who was abandoned during a home eviction in May 2011 made him too hard to give away.
"Ashburn was a very friendly cat who clearly would have been harmed on the streets," says Coolbaugh, who lives in Pigtown with his fiancee and six cats. "He had a cute face."
His rescuer had bloodwork run, caught the cat up on his shots and had him neutered. Ashburn settled into the house almost immediately.
Coolbaugh says the American domestic shorthair ("with lovely spots") is 4 years old and substitutes supervised play in the family's fenced-in yard for his former city roaming, which is strictly forbidden. Inside, he likes to rub his face on kitchen appliances, and loves to eat and ride in the car.
The road to bliss hasn't been without bumps. "Ashburn had a health scare in 2013," says Coolbaugh. The cat developed several urinary tract blockages and required surgery, which he had at the Light Street Animal Hospital. Recovery has been uneventful, and Ashburn is back to bouncing around the house, having earned the title of friendliest Coolbaugh cat. "After a short recovery, he's better than ever," says his happy owner.
