Kitty( Christopher T. Assaf, Baltimore Sun photo / September 2, 2013 )
A horse -- and a rare one at that -- isn't what usually comes to mind when one hears the name "Kitty," but that's the name Amy Perlow's Canadian horse came with, and that's the name she kept.
"Her registered name is De-Montem's Bart Hermie, which is French," says Perlow. "I have no clue what that means!"
Once on the verge of extinction, there are now an estimated 1,500 Canadian horses in the world. Kitty once belonged to a riding school where Perlow's children learned to ride. When Perlow's former horse had to be euthanized because of eye cancer, Kitty settled into the family from her stable in the Green Spring Valley.
"I love riding her out in nature and spending time grooming her," says Perlow. "I feel that we have a nice bond and we know each other pretty well."
Kitty loves to eat, and favors carrots, apples, and Cracklin' Oat Bran cereal, along with grass. She wears a grazing muzzle in the pasture so she doesn't overindulge (grass is very high in sugar). Perlow visits her five or six days per week and occasionally enters Kitty in timed competitions through set courses. Last spring, the pair took second place in one of the competitions.
Kitty is 15 years old and has enjoyed life with Perlow for the last four.
"She is my pet, my friend and my therapist," says Perlow. "I never have a bad day when I'm with her."
