Charlie( Kaitlin Newman, Baltimore Sun photo / September 29, 2013 )
Elizabeth Jewett wasn't quite prepared for her visit with a retiring cat breeder 10 years ago. She'd gone there to meet Charlie, who was a 1-year-old Siamese, and found he'd lived his entire life in a cage in the breeder's dark basement.
"When I asked to see Charlie, she pulled him out of a zipped-up sports bag," says Jewett.
Charlie had never looked out a window and never played with another cat, and Jewett's decision to adopt him was made instantly.
Charlie has spent the past decade tagging along to work with Jewett, a dog and house sitter, and living the kitty dream with plenty of windows and beds from which to choose. He's on a strict diet because of food allergies but loves playing with, napping with, and helping groom dogs, and roughhousing with Jewett's other cats in their Hamilton home. Although he started out in a cage, he caught on quickly.
"He watched his new brother, Rocky, a Blue Russian, and copied him because he did not know how to do any of these things that cats who lived in homes did everyday," she says. "He was free!"
Now retired from the pet-sitting rounds, Charlie still loves visiting with other people and pets, his owner says.
"Charlie has gone on to become a brother, and a father to three other rescued boys," she says. "He has brought so much joy into so many lives."
