Kasel Associated Industries recalled all treats manufactured at its Denver facility from April 20 through September 20, 2012. Brands affected include Boots & Barkley (sold at Target stores), Bixbi, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Natural, Petco, and Best Bully Stick. Products include pig’s ears, beef knuckles and ribs, chicken chips, several varieties of jerky, and other treats. You can see the full list, including lot numbers, on the FDA’s website.
Pets who eat salmonella-tainted foods can experience decreased appetite, abdominal pain, lethargy, vomiting, fever, and regular or bloody diarrhea. Dogs carrying salmonella can infect other animals, even if they’re symptom free. If your dog has consumed treats on the list and experiences any of those symptoms, the FDA advises contacting a veterinarian immediately.
Human symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, nausea, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
If you or your pet has become ill from consuming these treats, report it at fda.gov/petfoodcomplaints. Questions should be directed to Kasel Associated Industries at 800-218-4417. If you have the recalled treats at home, return them to the store for a refund.
