At the Northwest Kennel Club they're not only honoring dogs for being the best in breed, but also honoring one special dog for saving his owners life.

The Northwest Arkansas AKC dog show was full of the best dogs and the best breeds around. But not all of them were there to take home a ribbon.

This is polo. He's a 12 year old Labrador mix. Polo wasn't competing in this year's dog show, but today he was front and center as if he were best in show. Last June polo's owner, Curtis Feimster, was asleep in his home when it caught on fire. His smoke alarm wasn't working, and polo started to bark.

"I thought I was dreaming," Curtis said. "Just rolled over and then he kept jumping at my face with a type of bark a noise sound like a musical instrument out of tune. Jumped up saw smoke and walked down the hallway and that's when we saw flames."

Curtis and Polo were able to get out through the back door. This was all that remained of their home. Curtis says if it wasn't for Polo, he wouldn't have made it out alive.

"I don't think I would have woke up because they said I already had a lot of smoke which was why I was kind of sleeping so much and was coughing up smoke when we both got outside," Curtis says. "So he's my hero."

Curtis says he didn't expect polo to be honored, but he's proud. He says that since the fire, he and Polo are closer than ever, and he has a message for all dog lovers out there.

Curtis says, "Stay close to your dog and as they always say a dog is a man's best friend, cause he's definitely mine."

Curtis says he and polo have been doing well since the fire, and right now he is working to rebuild his home.
