If you’ve been on the fence about getting a cat, July might be the time to pounce.
For the second year in a row, 20 shelters across the state are waiving adoption fees for cats and kittens during July, according to a news release from the Maryland SPCA.
Those who adopt cats or kittens from the Baltimore County Animal Services, Baltimore Humane Society, BARCS or the Maryland SPCA will receive a certificate for a free feline wellness exam at The Cat Hospital at Towson, the presenting sponsor for this year’s “Maryland 2,000” initiative.
The SPCA partnered with Baltimore County Animal Services, Baltimore Humane Society and BARCS to launch the event last year and this July. Last year, 2,395 cats or kittens were adopted, according to the Maryland SPCA.
Summer is one of the busiest times for shelters, which see “a huge influx of kittens and cats,” according to the releasereleased last month.
“It’s critical that we find homes for the cats and kittens currently in our shelters, so we can continue to take in and save other felines who need our help,” Nichole Miller, director of operations at the Maryland SPCA, said in the release. “The Maryland 2,000 is a way for our shelters to come together to raise awareness about how overcrowded shelters are during ‘Kitten Season’ — when most kittens are born — and to ultimately save lives.”
