Got kids and no power? Here's some activity ideas to keep cool

The forecast isn't pretty, with highs predicted in the high 90s, and thousands of people are without power. What's a parent to do to keep cool?

Here's a roundup of some places with air conditioning that are open (subject to change, of course, and assuming you can see this on a wireless device before your battery runs out):

  • Howard County Libraries are open normal hours today, according to the Howard County Government Facebook page. (Glenwood is open but has no A/C. UPDATE: Miller Branch is now closed due to power outages.)
  • Harford County has cooling centers open at all its libraries, according to MEMA.
  • Towson Library is open (but Arbutus, Catonsville and Pikesville are closed due to power outages), per a phone call.
  • The B&O Railroad Museum is open, according to its Facebook page
  • Charm City Kids Clubs is open until 11:30, according to its Facebook page
  • Kiddie Crusoe in Lutherville is open regular hours, per a phone call.
  • The Maryland Zoo (though not air-conditioned, of course) was closed, but is now open, according to its Facebook page
  • According to the Enoch Pratt Free Library Facebook page, "The following branches have power and are OPEN: Central Library, Pennsylvania Ave, Forest Park, Hampden, and Herring Run."
  • The National Aquarium is open, according to its Twitter feed
  • Maryland Science Center is open, according to Twitter
  • The Mall in Columbia and Towson Town Center are both open.

Other ideas: bounce houses, pools, ice cream (natch), but you might want to call first.

  • In Columbia, "Dickinson pool is without power and Bryant Woods has storm damage. Both will be closed until further notice," according to the Columbia Association Facebook page. UPDATE: As of this afternoon, the pools are open to all Columbia residents without power for free on Saturday. The pools are open until 8:30.
  • In Anne Arundel County, many of the branches are closed for the day due to power (South County, Broadneck, Severna Park, Provinces, Maryland City at Russett Branch and West County Area Library), according to the Anne Arundel County Public Library Facebook page.
