A new mobile app developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics aims to help children stay free from sports injuries by encouraging them to do some home strength-training.
The IronKids app includes workout demonstrations and tips from Dr. Jordan Metzl, a sports medicine pediatrician in New York and an Ironman triathlete. Metzle and the AAP say that strength-training can help prepare kids’ bodies for sports – and that it’s safe for children 8 and up.
People confuse strength-training with power-lifting, which is not appropriate for children, says Metzle. He also says that, in general, there aren’t a lot of strength-training resources for kids. This app was developed to help fill that gap.
