Ideas to steal from Roman and Williams' 'Things We Made'
Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer, the designers behind the firm Roman and Williams, have used their earlier careers in Hollywood production design to create cinematic interiors for hotels and homes. They walk us through the concepts behind the looks.

For what had been a cavernous white entry to Ace Hotel, Alesch and Standefer used a technique that would make some other interior designers cringe: They painted the ceiling black. "There's that whole idea — don't paint a wall dark because it will come closer to you," Alesch said, adding that they think the notion is "completely wrong."
"If the walls are dark, the perimeter disappears and it becomes almost a dream-like space that you can lose yourself in," Alesch said. He and Standefer equate the effect to that of a black-box theater. "It's atmosphere," Standefer said. "Sometimes we call it 'smoking a room.'"
