'House of the sun' up for auction in Howard

At the front entrance of the house at 11743 Springhaven Court is a stone wall with the word "Haleakala" on it, which in Hawaiian means "house of the sun."

The owner of the house in Ellicott City has ties to Hawaii, according to Keller Williams agent Bob Lucido, who has listed the property for a June 21 auction.

Lucido calls the Craftsman-style home "a truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece," built in 2009 by architect William Douglas Beims.

A gated entrance leads to the house located on more than 7 acres in Ellicott City's Farside Community," Beims said. Its listed price is $7.9 million.

The brick front and stucco residence features almost 12,000 square feet of living space and includes six large bedroom suites, eight full bathrooms and two half-baths. A finished basement tacks on nearly 6,000 square feet of additional space, bringing the home's overall interior to more than 17,000 square feet.

"This house is like nothing you've ever seen before," said Lucido. A preview will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Private showings are available by appointment.

A grand hall has a staircase leading to rooms situated on multiple levels. Living areas include a family room, kitchen, breakfast room, and dining and music rooms. There is also a den, a game room, a media room, a Florida sunroom and an enclosed porch.

A sloping walkout leads to a tennis court, a double-decker pool and a pool house that is so remarkable, Lucido said, that he would live there.

"This home is like a Hawaiian hotel," Lucido said. "It took three years to build and would be very hard to produce today."

Lucido said the auction is not a distress situation.

"This house is going to sell once the auction starts," he said. "It might start at $2 [million] to $3 million — we don't know — but once the bidding starts, someone will be buying it. And what an amazing opportunity it will be for the new owner."
