What's in Store: Community Forklift

It bills itself as the DC area's largest thrift store for building materials, with 40,000 square feet filled with surplus and salvaged stuff. That warehouse includes furniture and a vintage department where you can fill some real gems for your home. What's more, the money made here all goes to help those in need, help create jobs, and promote environmentally friendly design and building. Roy Prodoux not only volunteers at the warehouse, but he uses the organization's recycling philosophy to create some accent pieces for sale there. The desk clock ($65) is made of old Washington curbstone. The bookends ($80/pair) are made of pegmatite from Burtonsville. And the trivet ($20) is recyled granite. Community Forklift is at 4671 Tanglewood Drive, Hyattsville. Call 301-985-5180 or go to communityforklift.com.
