Macklemore wants to recruit you for the ACLU

Love him or hate him, there's no denying Macklemore is a high-profile, staunchly spoken advocate for the LGBT community.

His straight-penned gay-rights anthem "Same Love" has brought attention to the same-sex marriage fight, and he's used his fame to herald the cause of LGBT equality at events like Preakness and the MTV Video Music Awards.

Now, he's using his renown to urge people to become card-carrying members -- no, literally -- of the American Civil Liberties Union.

In a well-produced but awkwardly scripted video (the first shot is so 1980s PSA it almost hurts), Macklemore explains that he carries an ACLU card because it "lets my gay friends marry the hell out of each other" and "says 'Hey girl, it's your vagina, and you should be able to do what you want to.'"

We here at Gay Matters are fairly certain the card can't speak and possesses little in the way of legislative or judicial power. But we see what Macklemore's trying to do, and we're always glad when a celebrity uses his or her platform to support the LGBT rights cause.

Even if we don't always dig the music.
