The Doris Day Way

It's fab to be feminine this fall. “It's a very All-American '50's trend,” says Pria Rayadurg, co-owner of the Cloud 9 Clothing chain in Maryland. Think either the classic fitted sheath, or the shirtwaist dress. If you really want to go girly, the summer's florals are continuing to bloom this fall. To provide a bit of edge to the look, Natalie Graham, owner of Mount Vernon's The Doll House, suggests wearing a circle skirt that mixes fabrics and textures with a fitted bodice, as in this Lulu Mari dress, $63 at Cloud 9. Consider adding another strong fall trend, the sweater. Cardigans -- especially the "big, flowy" kind -- are back in a big way, but then so is just about any kind of knit. Greige "grandpa" sweater, $63 by Tulle at Cloud 9. The fringey scarf has been on the scene for awhile now, but it is still going strong. Gray tassel scarf, $23 at Cloud 9. So is statement jewelry, particularly pieces that combine traditional components with textiles. Purple felt and rubber necklace worn as bracelet, $115 by Barbara de Jounge at Upstairs on 7th. And hats, like this mulberry cloche from Target, $14.99, are a fun finishing touch.
