Lika many parents, I spent hours poring over "Where's Waldo" books with my kids, but I was amazed to hear that the series is marking its 25th anniversary beginning today. How time flies.
The geeky guy with the red-striped shirt and goofy cap has become a cultural icon, and millions of kids have enjoyed searching for him in the elaborately illustrated books. Each one combines the joys of a game of hide-and-seek with the reading experience, so it's easy to see why they've become so popular.
The books have sold more than 58 million copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 30 languages, according to the publishers. Of course, these days there are electronic versions too: More than 6 million "Where's Waldo" apps have been sold.
To highlight the anniversary, there are plenty of events planned, including a red-and-white lighting of the Empire State Building Friday. The Los Angeles Times notes that fashion will be a part of the celebration, too, as Comme des Garcons boutiques offer $245 short-sleeved T-shirts and Zatchels, a British bag maker, is selling a themed tote bag for about $177.
