The movie is adapted from Mary Norton's "The Borrowers," the first book in a series about a group of little people who live under the floorboards of a house and borrow things need for their survival. Among them is teeny Arrietty Clock. She and the others ingeniously repurpose household items -- matchboxes are used for storage, postage stamps as paintings -- and try to go unnoticed. Among the actors givng voice to the animated characters are Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett and Will Arnett.
Norton, a British author, also wrote a pair of stories about children and an amateur witch, later adapted into the movie "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." Norton (1903-1992) obviously was way ahead of her time. If she were alive today, she'd be turning out movie after movie for studios such as Pixar and Disney.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
