Pratt library offers a piece of history on Lincoln's birthday

To mark the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, the Enoch Pratt Free Library is offering a look at a bit of history today.

The Pratt will have a presidential appointment signed by Lincoln on display in the main hall of the Central Library downtown from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The document is the appointment of Walter Graham of New Jersey as Consul of the United States of America at Cape Town, January 19, 1863, the Pratt said. It was signed by Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward, and was given to the library by Mrs. William F. Bevan in 1940.

Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1806, and was assassinated on Good Friday, April 14, 1865.

The document is part of the library’s Special Collections Department, which includes rare books, manuscripts, prints, photographs, posters and post cards.
