As I noted Saturday, The Hunger Games movie was off to a big weekend, and the totals are huge: about $155 million.
To give it some perspective, that topped the total from the Top 12 movies for all but two weekends this year, according to Box Office Mojo, which tracks these things. The adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel ranked third all-time for opening weekend gross, behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), the website said. Yes, Twilight fans, the Stephenie Meyer adaptations were huge, but not this huge.
For those who are really, really patient: ABC Family has picked up the basic cable rights to the movie, and has put it on the 2014 schedule, according to Deadline Hollywood.
All of this bodes well for the rest of the trilogy -- "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay." The second movie is due out in late 2013. As for the last installment, producer Nina Jacobson says it is still uncertain whether that will be split into two parts, a la "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn."
