As the Baltimore Ravens get ready for this weekend's game, folks are geared up for a special playoff edition of Purple Friday, with colorful sweatshirts, caps, shirts, sweaters, etc. For the bookish, here are some favorite purple titles, to get in the mood for the game.
-- "Harold and the Purple Crayon." Crockett Johnson's marvelous children's book describes the adventures of a boy who draws his own adventures with a magical crayon.
-- "The Purple Decades-A Reader." The sampler of new journalism by Tom Wolfe, one of my favorite authors, includes pieces such as "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers" and excerpts from "The Right Stuff."
-- "The Color Purple." Alice Walker's Pulitzer-winning novel about a young woman who braves the scars of incest and other abuse.
-- "Riders of the Purple Sage." A classic cowboy novel by the king of the genre, Zane Grey.
-- "Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading" by Nina Sankovitch. For solace after the death of her sister, the author gains comfort through the works of Toni Morrison, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Leo Tolstoy and other.
