Book lovers have a new source for finding good reads: Bookish, a new website created by Hachette, Penguin and Simon & Schuster. The site, which kicked off today, offers articles, reading recommendations and options to buy books through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other sources. Though it was bankrolled by the three publishers, the site promises to highlight a much wider array of books in its magazine-like style.
Today, Elizabeth Gilbert takes issue with Philip Roth and other authors who have complained that the writing life is too grueling. And Rhonda Byrne discusses the inspiration for her "law of attraction" -- the idea that our thoughts can change reality -- and books such as "The Secret."
“Bookish was created to serve as a champion of books, writers and, most importantly,
readers,” Bookish CEO Ardy Khazaei said in a statement. “Ultimately, we seek to expand the overall marketplace for books, and whether a book gets into a reader’s hands via Bookish’s ecommerce partner or another retailer, everyone – from the publisher, to the retailer, the
author and the reader – wins.”
According to the New York Times, the site was scheduled to start in mid-2011, but was delayed in part to adjust the book recommendation engine. Bookish’s tool takes into account reviews and awards, and eventually will reflect a reader’s own description of books.
Khazaei told the Times that personal recommendations are not always the best way to match reader tastes, adding that friends and relatives “won’t be able to know about as many relevant books as our tool can.”
