We like books that lead to good discussion, have some depth to them, are honest and real.
We meet once a month at someone's house, and the host gets to pick the next book.
We keep a book "diary" and always rate each book (out of five stars) each month. It's fun to look back and see how we've rated them. We still give one member grief for suggesting "Lady Chatterley's Lover" byD.H. Lawrence — it was rated a half a star.
Worst excuse for not reading an assigned book: "'Top Chef' was on."
Some standouts are "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls, "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri, "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, "Promise Me" by Nancy Brinker with Joni Rodgers, "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" by Lorna Landvik and "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See.
We really didn't like "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin or "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. We don't like useless, narcissistic books by self-absorbed authors who get in the way of a good story.
We'd love to meet Jen Lancaster. She seems like she'd be great fun to have a glass of wine with! Her sarcastic, amusing take on life is secretly what we are all thinking. Plus she's hilarious!
Next up: "50 Shades of Grey" by E L James (we kick off summer with a fun one!), "Swamplandia!" by Karen Russell.
