Eel reportedly bites Annapolis woman visiting Hawaii

An Annapolis woman was bitten by an eel while visiting Hawaii in late July, according to multiple news reports.

Kristen Porter, 51, was floating off a beach in Waikiki on July 29 when a moray eel bit her foot, Hawaiian television station KHON-TV reported Thursday.

Porter told reporters she was surprised when she felt something latch onto her foot, and knew it was bad when she saw blood in the water.

Although officials were initially concerned a shark was the culprit behind Porter’s bite, the Waikiki Aquarium and the International Shark Attack File in Florida determined she was likely bitten a moray eel.

There are about 200 species of moray eels, but it’s rare for eels to attack humans.

Porter could not be reached for comment Monday morning.
