Here's some backstory on Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian's baby name

On Wednesday, tennis star Serena Williams shared the first photo of her new baby girl and announced her name, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. There’s plenty right there to “awww” about.

But diving deeper into the name is another sweet story. The baby is named after her father, Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and a former Columbia resident. But growing up, Ohanian didn’t love the name that his daughter now shares.

As Baltimore Sun reporter Scott Dance wrote in a 2013 profile of Ohanian:

Though he was named after Alexis Argüello, the three-time world champion Nicaraguan boxer, "having a name that's usually given to girls" is a tough way to grow up, Ohanian wrote in his book, "Without Their Permission," published last month. He was overweight and always the tallest in his class, to boot, he added.

But, as he told Dance, that name and awkwardness was part of a “complex set of circumstances” that led him to his passion for computers and his eventual success with Reddit.

So while Alexis may be a more typical girl name, Williams and Ohanian’s baby has a new trend to buck as a female Jr. Looks like things have come full circle.
