Greg Wimmer posted his tribute, "Daniel, We Pray," online, and not only has it already been circulating widely through social media, the victim's pastor played it during a church service this weekend.
Daniel Borowy, 17, a special education student, was shot last week on the first day of school. He's been hospitalized since in critical condition, though he is expected to survive.
Wimmer, 31, is a musician who runs a composing business from his home. After the shooting he felt like he needed to help.
"Everyone in the community, they just want to do something to help, and I kept asking myself 'What can I do?'" he said Monday. "I thought, there's probably nothing I could do to make a difference, but something told me to write a song."
The song starts with words, "Daniel I don't know you, but I feel like I do."
"That Monday morning nightmare. Was so unfair to you.
We know you're in pain. And you'll be back again....
Daniel we know you'll pull through because everyone is praying for you."

Wimmer said he planned to just keep the song for himself but his family persauded him to share it.
"The response I got was overwhelming," he says. "Seeing so much good from it, it's just been wonderful. It already has changed my life."
Wimmer plans to have the song available on iTunes as soon as Wednesday. All proceeds will go the victim's family.
