Who you be?
Oh, we're sorry. That's who UB?
Comedian Bill Cosby had a lot of fun with the University of Baltimore' s initials Tuesday, playing around with them and coming up with all sorts of philosophical variations, including "You be who?" and a few select others.
No, this wasn't a stand-up routine. It was the UB commencement address, and Cosby was onstage Tuesday at the Lyric to give it. The crowd, by all reports, thought he was great.
"It was Bill Cosby, the comedian," said Peter Toran, UB's vice president of external affairs and planning. Listening to the Cos riff on the college's initials, he says, "was almost like a jazz improv."
But there was a message underlying the humor, Toran said. "He really did challenge, and motivate, and inspire."
Cosby received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the ceremony.
And while most graduates couldn't repeat what their commencement speakers said on a bet, UB's class of 2013 should remember this one for a good while.
"Nobody fell asleep, I can tell you that," Toran said.
