One too many margaritas isn't hard to manage during Cinco de Mayo.
So a number of organizations have teamed up to make sure no one in Baltimore gets behind the wheel with tequila breath that would break a breathalyzer.
AAA Mid-Atlantic, the Maryland Department of Transportation and Yellow Cab created "Tipsy? Taxi!" to offer drunken revelers a way to get home without driving. From 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday, anyone that calls a certain number to order a cab gets the ride free.
To get the free cab, people have to call 1-877-963-TAXI (8294). They'll take you home anywhere in the Baltimore metro area. If your bill is over $50 though, you're on your own. And you have to be over 21 years old.
Or, if you otherwise need sobering up, you can consider this statistic from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Over five years, during Cinco de Mayo, during the precise times Tispy? Taxi! will be offering rides, 179 people died in car accidents while driving drunk. In Maryland alone, four people died -- a bit over the national average.
Some people, clearly, could use a free cab.
“Cinco de Mayo has become a party night for many in the Baltimore area," Ragina C. Averella, AAA's manager of public and government affairs said in a statement. "We certainly want people to celebrate responsibly and are encouraging everyone to designate a sober driver before their parties begin. But if you are celebrating in Baltimore, by all means take advantage of the Tipsy?Taxi! Program."
Dwight Kines, general manager of Yellow Cab wanted people who might call and get a busy signal during the peak midnight to 2:30 a.m. time period to keep trying.
