Baltimore's Show Your Soft Side campaign has featured the likes of rock stars and pro athletes to convey its message of kindness to animals. But its newest and arguably most popular poster showcases an ordinary city beat cop.
The new ad featuring Officer Dan Waskiewicz was only released late Monday, but according to campaign organizers, it's already gone viral. The ad shows Waskiewicz, in uniform, getting a big, sloppy, wet kiss on the cheek from his dog, Bo. The accompanying copy: "When Officer Waz was called out to take down a dangerous dog in Baltimore City, he did the unthinkable. He adopted him."
This summer Waskiewicz became something of a local hero among dog lovers after a post he wrote in May for the Modified K9 blog started circulating.
In the post, the young officer tells the story of how he was called out to investigate a vicious dog chasing kids.
"When I came on the scene, I noticed people yelling out their windows at the dog. I followed the dog into an ally to see how it was acting. Going on my own approach, being a dog lover, I got out of my car and called the 'vicious dog' over to me. The dog came over with its tail between its legs and panting," he wrote. "I grabbed my water bottle and the dog sat down next to me and began licking my pants."
Though his partner wasn't a dog guy, Waskiewicz wrote that he convinced him that they should take the dog to a shelter. On the way, he decided to keep the dog.
He included pictures of his new pup, who he named Bo, licking his face and hanging out with the other two dogs in his new family.
The Show Your Soft Side campaign, launched last September, has featured rocker Tommy Lee, Oriole Adam Jones, former Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson and others on posters and billboards around town. The campaign's over-arching message is that real tough guys love animals, they don't hurt them.
