The cause was serious at the March of Dimes "Signature Chefs Auction," but the debate in the Baltimore Marriott Ballroom was lighthearted: What was the best dish of the evening? More than 500 guests roamed the room, sampling creations by more than 30 chefs from local restaurants, caterers and food vendors. They compared notes about who liked what, and got the lowdown on the best places to grab seconds.
The front runner seemed to be Thames Street Oyster House's offering.
"Lobster roll, hands down," said Caitlin Hilber, ADG Creative administrative assistant. "They were just heaven," said Lourdes Morales, retired travel agency owner.
Mary Kay Nabit - event honoree with husband Chuck Nabit - veered from the course, confessing her faves were corned beef from Farmstead Grill, and a pretzel roll-wrapped sausage from Fleet Street Kitchen.
Jeff and Mickie Rivest, event co-chairs, and Jennifer Tarr, March of Dimes of Central Maryland division director, refused to play favorites. But all of them admitted to preparing carefully for the evening.
"We did come very hungry," Jeff Rivest said with a laugh. "There are lots of chefs here [who] need our help tonight."
