Circuses are generally all about having fun and feeling happy. That certainly was the spirit of Cirque du Learning Gala, the annual fundraising event for South Baltimore Learning Center. Guests at the $110-a-ticket festivity had a number of activities to partake in: tarot card readings, a photo booth, silent auction, trapeze performances, and dancing.
But many in attendance said their bliss came more from the cause than the party.
"It's just very powerful to think that so many people in the community support us and help us," said Anne Schroth, SBLC board chair. "That's what floats my boat."
"Helping adults get their GED, learn to read and better their lives - that's the best part of it," said Ian Neuman, event chair.
For honoree Barry Blumberg, who has volunteered at the center for 14 years, the real high-flying show came not at this event, but another.
"When you go to one of the graduations of our adult learners [and] you see how proud they are and their confidence, it's like a spiritual experience," he said. "It's a joy."
